Does having 5 projects sound fun?
(Friday, August 29, 2008/12:01 AM)

Continuing the theme from my previous post, I think... I've met my eye candy... in one of my tutorials. She is rather shy and reserved like me, looks cute in a "jappy-style" kind of way, jotting down notes faithfully. Gives me the feeling that she's an all-rounded girl who has the looks and style and isn't too bimbotic or mugger-ish.

Just felt that I kinda let go of a wasted opportunity to group with her cos' I was sitting far away from her when we had to form project groups. Oh well, I guess I've gotta pay attention to my current project mate as well, cos' I realized she started reading my blog too! >.< She is also a genuinely nice person, and I guess what matters is that we can click well and get an 'A' grade for our project!

Talking about bimbos, I'm pleasantly surprised that my secondary school belle is also in the same tutorial class. However... That air of arrogance she carries now, the disregard she shows in her body language for her peers and tutors, and the tangible accent... Reeks heavily of an SPG to me.

Her friend as well... She's one of the most beautiful girls I've seen in NUS thus far, but she reeks even worse of an SPG. Both of them were busy styling their hair and making sure their nails are trimmed THROUGHOUT the entire tutorial. And once she starts talking in her uberly fake accent, I couldn't help but cringe.

Perfect epitome of NUS' infamous 'flower vase' stereotype? In case u dunno what that means, it signifies girls whose main purpose is to look and stay pretty, to be the 'belle' of the group, but can't actually do work even if their life depended on it. Oh well, I shan't delve deeper into this topic, or else someone in my social circle will say that I'm such a MEAN person again (u know who u are). =P

Funny thing was that, we were doing an exercise on stereotypes. Whenever the tutor mentions a word, such as 'Japan', we had to write 5 words that instantly comes to our mind. Eventually, we had to write 5 words for Singaporean men and women. Women wrote on men, men wrote on women. A guy wrote 'SPG' for Singaporean women and we had a good laugh. Moving on, some of the common stereotypes of Singaporean men are 'boring', 'square', 'childish' etc.

And the bimbo seconded those thoughts out LOUD, giving us the vibe that she totally despise Singaporean men. There and then, I had the mind to rebutt her by remarking "SO THAT'S why there's SO MANY SPGs in Singapore!", with the intentions of implying SOMETHING to her. Oh well, I'm a nice guy. Just wanna stay low profile for my tutorials. =)

Busy weekend ahead. Usual church service and we'll gonna have a youth event on Sunday! Looking forward to that of cos'! And I'm gonna see that blasted Eric for the first time in 2 1/2 years after our trip to Japan at the end of my NS 1st year. It's gonna be a fruitful weekend! =)

It's kinda funny how I was lamenting that I have a lack of girl-friends back in secondary, JC school days, and now when I have too many, instead, I lament that I can't seem to find a proper guy pal to talk to these days *lol*!

That's human nature for u. U'll be never satisfied with what u have. Some of my closer friends who understand my innate shy character might be wondering how my fortunes have 'reversed'. So I'm gonna tell u the reason why now.

I am acquainted with most of my female friends here in NUS through the most amazing human 'Internet' I've ever seen, named Kristal. Everyday without fail, she'll bump into at least 5 of her friends during our breaks (and I have to stand aside awkwardly, not knowing what to do while waiting for her =S), SMS her pals every 10 mins or so.

So far in this semester, in just a short span of 2 weeks, I've come to know at least 3-5 more of her friends, and 1 of them is about to commence on a project together with us. This girl is simply amazing. =) She has this sparkling quality about her that draws people from all walks of life to her.

Oh well, I shan't be complaining! Having a little more female touch in my life ain't that bad, but I really wish for a new guy pal to pop up soon enough. Sometimes, a guy just needs another guy to rant to about guy stuffs, which are taboo topics amongst girls. If u get what I mean. =D

Lessons ended early yesterday, and Kristal happened to drive her car to school, so she brought Roufang, Cynthia and I, to the Botak Jones at Clementi for lunch. I think this is the first time I acted like a total goof around girls, but glad they took my jokes in good spirit. At least... that's what I think. Rofl! =P

Sigh... Haven't meet any eye-candy yet for this semester... But hey! Gotta keep reminding myself that studies is priority. =) Once I improve my score to qualify for SEP, I should be aiming to go to Japan for my Year 3 studies, and then, I won't have to worry about not having eye-candy cos' I reckon there'll be too many to count! =D

Tutorials are starting next week. Projects (all freaking 5 of them) should be commencing as well. Gotta prepare for the tough life ahead. And hence, I proudly declare the commencement of lifeless Sundays dedicated to doing tutorials and projects! Hooray! =S

Music is the window to our souls
(Monday, August 18, 2008/11:51 PM)

Music is the window to our souls. Do u guys agree with that? I definitely agree with that wholeheartedly. =) For a guy who isn't terribly creative in the ways of the arts, music has allowed me to keep in touch with my aesthetic senses.

As for my taste in music, I gotta boast that I'm rather unique. ^^ Most people are geared towards music of a single language and genre. It's commonplace for youths these days to adore Jay Chou and his innovative music, and teenybopper megastar-wannabes on the Taiwanese music scene.

On the other hand, people who are more 'kantang' would love John Mayer's or Jason Mraz's songs if they frequent pubs to indulge in songs easy on the ears. Or rock bands such as Linkin Park if they love jamming heavy rock.

As for me, I have a broad spectrum of songs which I enjoy listening to. English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean. Pop, R&B, Rock. I love them all! =D For peeps who love to sing and hopes to make an impact someday, such as myself, it's important to broaden ur repertoire and appreciate music of different cultures! I shall introduce some songs to stir ur interests! =)

For English...
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours

I preferred other hit songs from this talented singer such as 'You and I Both' and 'Remedy', but 'I'm Yours' started to grow on me. Partly because I tend to favour songs which I can sing comfortably. So now u know... I'm not just satisfied in listening to a good song. I need to be able to sing it well in order for me to enjoy it fully! =)

For Chinese...
Derrick Hoh - Ni Zou Tian Qiao Wo Zou Di Xia Dao (Overhead Bridge, Underground Pass)

Stoic music critics would probably bash me for recommending a teenybopper's run-of-the-mill pop tune, but it's seriously not bad if u give it a try. It's karaoke-friendly, and coincidentally, I'm looking for the next karaoke-friendly tune to belt for future Kbox sessions with my dear buddy, Jaja KC. =D

For Japanese...
Bennie K - MONOCHROME

Unique and powerful Japanese vocals complemented by breathtaking musical arrangement. With cutesy idols running amok the entertainment scene with their irritating squeaky kawaii voice, it's refreshing to hear solid songs from serious music artistes. It's also the theme song for an ongoing uber funny JDorama, Seigi no Mikata. Check it out if u're free! =)

Bonus... Particularly for DBSK fanboys/fangirls (Debbie from our Singtel colleague clique, are u reading this? Hehe! ^_^)
Tohoshinki - Forever Love

I think I'm gonna name this song as the Japanese ballad of the year... Simply beautiful song, accompanied by musical arrangement comprising of elegant instruments such as the violin and piano. Esp. when it comes to the bridge, u'll feel goosebumps (positive ones!) if u're listening to it for the first few times.

Hope the songs are to ur liking! =)

疲れた~
(Wednesday, August 13, 2008/11:24 PM)

In case u're wondering what the Japanese words in my blog post title mean, it means... Tireddd... Alright, that sums up my feelings for the first week of school *rofl*! And tutorials aren't even starting yet. I shudder to think when my entire schedule is in full swing. =S

Actually, I wanted to take a hiatus off this blog. Well, since only KC and Deb are faithfully keeping up with my posts, it's kinda lame to blog for 2 ppl to read *lol*. Also, time is FRIGGIN' precious when the workload starts pouring in. =( But seeing how Janet is so excited that almost everyone in W429 has a blog now, I can't bear to break her heart. =) So I shall keep this blog active for as long as I can!

Taking 2 modules alone this sem. For 1 module, I have to face the infamous irksome twins of SoC. For the other module, my CCA acquaintance doesn't seem interested in making friends with me in real life, and besides, he has friends taking the module with him as well. This seriously sucks. =(

I realized that friends are such an integral part of my life, that I almost can't survive in life without them. Oh well, I feel that God is testing me to take up this challenge and be truly independent, relying on his strength and omnipresence to comfort me when I'm alone. I'll promise to run the race, even if I'm alone, my dear God! =)

Gimme some time to crack my brains to come up with better interesting posts in future. =D Maybe teach Japanese through my blog posts? Rofl!!! :) Darn early lessons tml... Gotta go to jaja land... (Private joke between my buddy KC and I: jaja can mean a range of things such as confused, crazy, sleepy, tired, retarded etc... LMAO! ^^) Yep so now u guys get it, JAJA TIME FOR ME! =D

YATTAAA!!!
(Thursday, August 7, 2008/8:42 PM)

YATTAAA!!! Finally passed my darn driving test! I thought I was a goner when my tester scolded me for making a bad mistake on the road, but I guess that he was lenient and gave me a pass anyways. Yay! Finally... After spending about $2k and wasting so much time on lessons and travelling to and fro BBDC.

But I gotta admit I've got poor road sense, so the challenge has only just begun. I think I needa sit down seriously one day and study the street directory *lol*! Oh well, I doubt I'll have many chances to use the car anyway. My father needs it for work on the weekdays and my bro uses it on weekends to get to church. =(

Anyhow, I'm still exhilarated that I've passed at long last! =)

Just a quick update! I'm kinda running out of ideas to blog as well. Haha. =) And school's starting soon so I doubt I'll have the luxury of time to update it regularly as well. Here's thanking all my faithful blog readers! =D

Social life in university
(Monday, August 4, 2008/8:30 PM)

I wonder why so many people are so desperate to improve their social lives during their university years. Attending several orientation camps, enrolling themselves in CCAs, fighting hard for a place to live in hostels. Of cos', I'm not saying that we should be social recluses, burying our heads in books and burning the midnight oil each and every day. But if it reaches a point that u're neglecting ur studies, u'll need to know when and where to draw the line.

One particular popular orientation camp would be the Union Camp, where the best looking peeps all over NUS would converge. Many freshies fight with tremendous might to secure a place in this wildly popular camp, probably on the context of meeting good-looking people from the opposite sex. And living together in close proximity for 2-3 nights? Pure gravy!

But one wonders if the relationships forged would be last long enough to make it worth the time and effort? One of my friends, who joined the Union Camp 2 years consecutively, lamented recently that the number of OG gatherings are dwindling as time goes by, till the point where she isn't in close contact with most of her previous OG mates anymore.

Of cos' maybe u're thinking u're just living for the moment, having fun while it lasts. Here's where my philosophy differs. If I know long-lasting relationships can't be forged, I wouldn't even want to waste a single second of my time. I was persuaded to join the NUS camp for my church peeps last year, and yeah it was fun and enjoyable, but in the end, nothing came out of it. Some OG acquaintances even avoided me when I wanted to approach them! This was a major reason why I didn't go for the second time this year, besides deciding to rest my body at home to prepare for my hospital procedure.

Some acquaintances of mine also remarked that as a university student, we should experience the hall life at least once, or else our university experience will not be 'complete'. In my opinion, that's utter bullshit. Listening to stories of friends living in hall, they have to stay up late at night for hall gatherings (3-4 AM on a regular basis *gasp*!), and engage themselves in hall CCAs in order to earn enough credits to stay on for future semesters.

In the previous semester, I had a project mate who was bounded by hall activities. Project deadlines were often pushed back cos' her schedule was simply packed to the brim, to the extent that she had no time for her own personal revision. While u're busy with ur own social life, for a moment in time, stay still and understand the severity of the repercussions. It might not only affect ur own studies, but also friends around u.

Even if university education takes on the form of private tuition with a grumpy old professor, I would gladly go through it. It seems as if the youths nowadays lose focus on the important things in life. Peeps go around searching for their next love mate and party clique, instead of concentrating on their studies. After all, we're all in university with the goal of receiving the coveted degree certificate. Isn't it so?

To all my peers and juniors who would be entering university in the near future, go ahead and develop a healthy social life, but do not lose sight of ur ultimate purpose and goal! =)
